Atlantic City drops plan aimed at detering bothersome seagulls

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - The seagulls are winners in Atlantic City, at least for now.

City officials are scrapping a proposal to cover the city's famed boardwalk with a wire shield to keep hungry birds from swooping down and bothering diners.

Animal rights activists criticized the idea, saying birds would be injured, and engineers expressed concerns as well. Attaching wires to light poles would have created a web that could be vulnerable to the wind.

Boardwalk business groups now plan to address the problem by putting dome-shaped covers over garbage cans and erecting "Don't Feed The Seagulls" signs.

Businesses also want the city to enforce fines for people who feed the birds.
